The senior class from Central Jr/Sr High in Burden recently had the privilege of attending a malpractice jury trial presided over by Judge LaDonna Lanning, in Winfield, as well as visiting with Judge Nick St. Peter during the lunch break. St. Peter discussed different aspects of a jury trial, and answered questions about his profession. In conjunction with the trial’s conclusion, St. Peter made a trip to the seniors’ classroom on December 5th. In order to provide the seniors with an additional perspective about the judicial branch in general, he was joined by defense attorney Jennifer Passiglia. Besides discussing the results of the malpractice suit, students were able to ask both St. Peter and Passiglia questions ranging from their most interesting courtroom experiences, to what led them towards their career choice. The importance of Due Process rights, guaranteed to everyone regardless of innocence, was also among their topics.

Senior Trey Hamilton thought both the trial and classroom visit were educational. He described being able to ask questions as his favorite part. As for attending the actual trial, Trey remarked, “the jury selection questions were very detailed. I would have never thought of some of them.”

Another senior, Caitlin Mannon, felt their interactions with the local judicial system was interesting. “I learned things I didn’t know, and liked when they talked about criminal stuff, especially the extra trainings the defense attorney has had to go to.”

Torrie Thiel, also a senior at Central, enjoyed actually being able to witness the process firsthand from their seats in the courtroom. “I didn’t know how much actually went into it,” explained Thiel.
