Welcome to Central Jr/Sr High School (CJSHS)

Central Jr/Sr High School (CJSHS) is a seventh through twelfth grade facility in the small, rural community of Burden, Kansas. It serves all of the middle and high school age children in a large, rural unified district, which includes the communities of Atlanta, Burden, Cambridge, and Grenola, along with the surrounding areas.

Central Jr/Sr High School is housed in a facility that adjoins the Central Elementary campus in Burden, Kansas. Due to economic reasons our school district switched to a 4-day school week beginning with the 2001-2002 school year.

Instruction for seven and eighth grade students is provided with five core subject areas: English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Physical Education or Athletics, and two elective areas with students choosing from: Family and Consumer Sciences, Industrial Technology, Exploratory Agriculture, Choir, Band, and Art. Instruction for ninth through twelfth graders is based on the Central Board of Education requirement for 24 credits to graduation. These requirements are as follows:

  •       Communications (4 Credits)
            • 3.5 Credits English Language Arts (reading, writing, literature, technical)
            • 0.5 Credits Communications (public speaking)

  •       Society and Humanities (4 Credits)
            • 3 Credits Social Studies (world, US, government)
            • 1 Credit Fine Arts (art, music, band, woodworking principals)

  •       STEM (7 Credits)
            • 3 Credits Math (algebraic and geometric concepts)
            • 3 Credits Science (physical, biological, earth/space)
            • 1 Credit STEM Elective (computer science, advanced math, advanced science,     
                 advanced technology, advanced (application level) CTE, etc.)

  •          Employability & Life Skills (9 Credits)
           • 0.5 Credit Physical Education
           • 0.5 Credit Health
           • 0.5 Credit Financial Literacy      
           • 0.5 Credit Family Studies
           • 1 Credit Business

       • 6 Elective Credits Based on Individualized Plan of Study (emphasis on CTE/Pathway
             courses)

All students at CJSHS participate in Multi Tiered Systems of Support in both reading and math interventions. USD 462 became a Leader in Me district in the 2021-2022 school district. All students at CJSHS participate in learning the seven habits of leadership and serve on leadership, culture, and academic action teams. All students at CJSHS will create an Individualized Plan of Study which will assist in increasing post secondary success and preparedness.

CJSHS offers a variety of athletics, activities, and organizations for students to participate in. These include, but are not limited to: football, volleyball, cross country, cheerleading, basketball, wrestling, track & field, baseball, softball, forensics, national honor society, scholar's bowl, science olympiad, math relays, powerlifting, pep band, FCA, FFA, and more!

CJSHS also has an active booster club organization which sponsors various fundraisers and activities to support student athletes.

CJSHS enrollment takes place starting at the end of July prior to the school year. Non-Resident Enrollment applications are available each June.
